Darjeeling's Hidden Gem: A Rare High-Altitude Yellow Tea with Savory Elegance

This exquisite yellow tea hails from the Yanki Tea Factory, a remarkable small village cooperative in Darjeeling. Founded by Yanki, a former tea plucker turned visionary, this cooperative was established to uplift her community through the art of tea-making. They are also the creators of our exceptional Yanki Red Oolong.

During our visit in July 2022, we had the pleasure of meeting Allan, Yanki’s son, who revealed a delightful surprise—a yellow tea he had crafted. Yellow tea, historically reserved for Chinese emperors, is a rare treasure, even today, produced only in limited quantities due to the exceptional skill required in its creation. The intricate yellowing process, which eliminates the grassiness found in green tea, results in a mellow, soft, and beautifully rounded cup.

In 2023, we had the privilege of tasting Yanki’s high-altitude, whole-leaf yellow tea, and we were utterly captivated. The tea offers a luxurious, rich mouthfeel with delicate, savory notes reminiscent of a buttered croissant and greens sautéed in ghee. It’s a truly unforgettable experience for the discerning palate.

Dry leaves

The dry leaves are gracefully curled in shades of green, adorned with abundant, delicate creamy buds.

Wet leaves

Once steeped, the leaves unfurl into whole, beautiful young leaves and buds, revealing shades of green and yellow. The aroma is reminiscent of a yellow rose, intertwined with delicate savory notes of greens sautéed in ghee and the richness of a buttered croissant.

Tea liquor

The liquor is translucent with a pale yellow hue, offering a rich mouthfeel and medium viscosity. There is a decadent savoriness that is complemented by subtle sweet and umami notes, leaving a lasting aftertaste. The tasting journey begins with hints of yellow rose, buttery croissants, and green vegetables sautéed in ghee, followed by a delicate nutty finish reminiscent of sunflower seeds.

Darjeeling

Origin

Where does your rare Darjeeling Yellow Tea come from?

This Darjeeling Yellow tea is a rare and exceptional gem, crafted by Allan, a passionate young tea maker from the Yanki Darjeeling Orthodox Small Tea Growers Welfare Society, a small-batch tea farm in Rangbang Village. The farm was founded by Allan’s mother, Yanki, who once worked as a tea plucker, selling her leaves to large manufacturers in the region. After a heart-wrenching experience where her hard-earned leaves were rejected and she lost a day’s wages, Yanki vowed to create her own tea farm. Today, through her cooperative, she empowers her fellow villagers, paying them four to five times more than other local manufacturers. We are thrilled to collaborate with them, sharing their finest teas with you.

Red pandas dwell in the Eastern Himalayan region of India and also in China. They are skillful acrobats that are arboreal. They are mostly herbivorous and their name comes from a Nepali word “ponya” which means one who eats bamboo. Red pandas are endangered and there are about 10,000 animals left, of which over 50% live in India.

Delicious!

I had never tried a yellow tea before, so when this one popped up, I had to try it. I've been really impressed. It's not far from a green tea, unsurprisingly, but with a unique flavor and mellowness that I really enjoy. I know this is a limited edition, but I hope more will become available later!
